Height Lengthening FAQs
What is height lengthening?
Height lengthening is a surgery that increases the length of the long bones of the leg. This procedure can be done on the femur (thigh) and/or on the tibia (shin).
How tall can you grow with height lengthening?
Most candidates are able to increase their height up to 3.1 inches (8 cm) with one lengthening procedure (usually femurs) without any issues. Additional lengthening of the tibias can be performed to increase height by an additional 2.5 inches (6.5 cm).
How much does height lengthening cost?
Your height needs will be assessed after a thorough physical exam has been completed. The costs vary depending on each person’s needs, so you will need to come in for a personal consultation. See cost range below.
Is there financing available for the procedure?
Financing is available for surgery through Care Credit, where the ability to finance the procedure is dependent upon your credit rating. Learn more about this during your consultation.
How do you prepare for surgery?
It is important to be healthy prior to surgery. We will help prepare your body by prescribing exercises that will strengthen your lower and upper legs as well as your buttocks muscles. Core strengthening and upper body exercises are also highly recommended, as you will likely need to use these areas a little more during your recovery.
Eating well is also crucial to proper healing. Your doctor may suggest taking a multivitamin and eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and calcium-rich foods. Avoiding sugar, fast food, and processed foods can also help your body heal faster.
Mental preparation is also extremely important. Be prepared to experience significant pain immediately after surgery. Although the intensity will decrease as your body heals, there will still be some discomfort during the lengthening process.
If you set your expectations properly, you will be better prepared.
What does the recovery process look like?
The recovery time is 3-4 months before you can walk without any assistance and 6-8 months for competitive sports. The new Precice system can withstand up to 150 pounds (68 kg) of weight-bearing after surgery. This allows patients to move around without crutches after a few weeks and makes recovery time much easier. You will also need to attend Physical Therapy to stretch and strengthen your legs. There will be little small scars on your body after the surgery.
How long after surgery can I walk?
Even with the Precice 2 system, in the beginning you will need a walker for short walks. You will only need to use a wheelchair for long distances when getting the procedure done. With Precice 2 you can transition to crutches faster and need no helping devices after a few weeks.
What can I go back to exercise and sports?
You can go back to training your upper body right away, however, it can take 6-8 months to go back to dancing, running, and full weight training. It may take up to a year to go back to doing competitive sports, such as soccer, tennis, or basketball.
Real Results You Can See!

Meet Moses! His starting height in 2016 was 5’5, and now he is at 5’10” after undergoing surgery on his femurs and his tibias.

This is a 30-year-old man that underwent the Height Lengthening procedure for his femurs and tibias. He went form 5’6” to 5’11” in his height by gaining 3 inches from his femurs and 2 inches in his tibias using the Precice nail system. That’s a total of 5 inches total added to his height!

The cost of height lengthening surgery is usually not covered by health insurance, but in some cases, it may be. Your surgeon’s office can verify any coverage you may have and help you get partial or full reimbursement for surgery. However, since most insurance companies won’t cover the cost, you will likely need to pay for your surgery out of pocket. Ask us about financing options that may be available to you.
